AI for Irish SMEs: where to start without wasting money

10 June 2026 · Synect

Most small businesses don’t fail at AI because the technology is too hard. They fail because they start in the wrong place — automating something flashy instead of something painful.

Here’s the approach we use with every client.

Start with the task that eats your week

Forget “AI strategy” for a moment. Ask a simpler question: what do you (or your team) do over and over that nobody enjoys? Answering the same client questions. Copy-pasting data between systems. Drafting the same kind of document. Chasing follow-ups. That repetitive, rules-based work is where AI pays for itself fastest.

Measure the hours before you automate

If you can’t say roughly how many hours a task costs each week, you won’t be able to tell whether automating it worked. A rough number is fine — “about five hours across the team” — but write it down first.

Pick one thing. Ship it. Then expand.

The biggest mistake is trying to transform everything at once. One well-chosen automation that reliably saves five hours a week is worth more than an ambitious system that’s still “nearly ready” six months later.
